Cracked Foundation in Unionville: A 2-Day Exterior Waterproofing Story
The owner of a beautiful 1973 side-split in Unionville had been chasing the same wet basement problem for nine years. Two previous "waterproofing companies" had sold him interior solutions only. The water kept coming back.
We did exterior basement waterproofing — the permanent fix. Here's the day-by-day.
Day 1: Excavation and prep
We hand-dug along the affected wall down to the footing — about 7 feet. Old parging was crumbling in our hands. The original tar coating from the 70s had completely failed. Two hairline cracks were visible in daylight.
We pressure-washed the wall, let it dry, and prepped both cracks for injection.
Day 2: Membrane, dimple board, and weeping tile
After injecting the cracks, we applied a thick rubberized waterproofing membrane across the entire exposed wall, then installed a dimple board to create an air gap and channel any future water down to the new weeping tile we tied into the existing drain.
Backfilled with clean gravel, then native soil, then re-graded the surface to slope away from the house at the proper angle.
Why exterior is the permanent fix
Interior basement waterproofing manages water AFTER it enters the foundation. Exterior basement waterproofing stops water from entering at all. For chronic leaks, exterior is almost always the right answer — and it comes with our written workmanship warranty.
